Large leaves and a graceful form give Bird of Paradise its elegant, tropical flair. Sometimes called the queen of the plant world, it is stately and moderately easy to care for. Although named for its distinctive bird-shaped flowers, Bird of Paradise is grown indoors for its distinctive shape and impactful size.

Pro Tips

Keep these big leaves dust-free by wiping them down occasionally with a wet towel. Bird of Paradise require regular hygeine for optimal health. Without high levels of light, flowering is unlikely indoors. Its leaves naturally split over time to allow sunlight to get through to lower leaves. To prevent excessive splitting, make sure your plant isn't exposed to overly dry air or drafts.

Origin

Bird of Paradise, also called Strelitzia Nicolai, is native to South Africa, where it forms large evergreen groves. The showy flowers are adapted to cover birds feet with pollen when they drink from the blue petals filled with nectar. Named by the director of the royal gardens, Sir Joseph Banks, for Queen Charlotte, who was also known as the Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Traditionally given for 9th wedding anniversaries and a symbol of love and faithfulness.
