care advice
Prickly Pear Cactus has jointed pads that resemble beaver tails. They have a playful look, but don't forget their tough spikes. As an arid succulent, Prickly Pear is a low-maintenance plant that thrives on neglect and sunshine. Given bright sun, this is one of the fastest-growing cactus out there.

Does best in direct sun, with at least 4 hrs of exposure per day

Water very rarely, once soil is completely dry

Pet Friendly - Nontoxic

Sits 16-22" tall by 5-9" wideIn a 6" grow pot
Pro Tips
Remember, this is a desert plant! It needs to dry adequately for optimal health, and direct sunlight is non-negotiable. Wait until the pads look a little shriveled before watering it again. Clump-forming and fast-growing, this cactus often goes through growth spurts during the summer or when exposed to ample direct sunlight.
Origin
Sometimes called Opuntia Cactus, Prickly Pear Cactus is native to the United States and Mexico. It has a large range, from Idaho to Louisiana and south to arid Mexico. It was widely used by Native Americans for food and medical applications. It's fruit and pads were eaten and the sap was topically used as a medicine. Today its fruit is commonly found in jams and candies.
